General Information

Wheatsheaf cottage was originally the miller's cottage and barn on the Estate. Vaulted oak beamed ceilings, thick welsh slate window sills and double french doors leading out onto a brick paved terrace overlooking the view down to the valley make this a stunningly beautiful holiday property.

 

The cottage is centuries old and most of the really unusual features have been retained, including some arrow slit windows, a huge lifting wheel and a beautiful original exterior stone staircase. The "Great Room" features a woodburner with a plentiful supply of logs, high vaulted ceiling and original stone floors. The conservatory/sunroom is a great place to relax in as it overlooks adjacent the water garden. It does contain a day bed and therefore will accommodate a 5th person.

Living Area

The living area of Wheatsheaf Cottage has arrow slit windows, stable doors and huge glass French windows in the great room that open out onto a private terrace. This impressively large great room has a high vaulted ceiling with green oak A-frames, natural finish oak panelling from the estate and incorporates some really beautiful ancient curved long oak beams. It also features a unique antique wooden lifting wheel that was still actively in use until a few years ago.

Relax on one of the two huge and comfortable 8-way hand tied sofas with tapestry fabric and loads of throw cushions. These superb quality soft furnishings are complimented by some handsome pieces of furniture including a magnificent 8 feet tall mahogany grandfather clock. A remarkable collection of paintings features countryside wildlife including badgers and otters painted on large thick slabs of Welsh slate that were rescued long ago from an old manor house. Reclaimed rustic flag-stone flooring with an under floor heating system keeps this room warm & cozy during the cooler months and a large Jotul woodburner provides a roaring open fire to curl up beside. Open the oak shutters beside the fireplace and find a 36” TV & DVD. Guests have also been provided with a stereo/CD player. On long lazy Summer days and balmy country evenings, leave the huge outward opening French windows open to enjoy gentle breezes and stroll out onto the expansive brick paved terrace to enjoy lunch, supper or a quiet drink overlooking one of the most spectacular views in the whole of Carmarthenshire.

The bespoke hardwood conservatory overlooking the water garden is a great quiet space to enjoy a good book or a glass of wine at sunset. This room contains a day bed that will accommodate a fifth person.

Kitchen

The eat-in Kitchen has a large scrubbed pine table and chairs, together with freestanding dressers topped with thick blue-gray Welsh slate worktops. This traditional style kitchen has all new appliances including an extra wide ceramic top range style cooker with self cleaning oven, a microwave and dishwasher. The kitchen is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery, pots & pans, utensils and small electrical appliances.

 

The adjacent utility room contains an extra large high capacity washing machine & a large dryer, iron & ironing board, plus an American style side-by-side larder refrigerator/freezer with ice-maker.

Bedrooms

Bedroom 1 has burnished wide plank oak floors with cosy underfloor heating, a 5 foot wide antique style pine bed with best quality extra thick pillow top mattress, 100% cotton sateen 400 thread count linens, television and DVD. Southerly views from the windows are down over the valley and westerly views out over the walled water garden. There is an en-suite bathroom and a fitted closet.

A hand built oak staircase utilising original byre metalwork as a handrail leads up from the great room to Bedroom 2. It has exposed oakbeams, cottage-style maple wood floor, central heating and a 5 foot wide antique pine bed with best quality extra thick pillow top mattress, superb quality linens, television and DVD. Views are southerly down over the valley and also easterly (in the Spring you can see a huge swathe of golden daffodils running from the Estate entrance gate right down to the courtyard). This second bedroom has an armoire and an en-suite bathroom.

Bathrooms

Both of the bathrooms come with a liberal supply of large, fluffy freshly laundered white towels.

 

The oak panelled Bathroom 1 has a traditional cast iron roll top bath tub with shower spray attachment, a neo-angle corner shower and the best quality traditionally styled Heritage porcelain fixtures including high cistern toilet and large washbasin.

The private en-suite bathroom 2 has a cast iron claw foot roll top slipper bath & hand held shower/mixer. The superb quality Heritage porcelain fixtures include a traditional high cistern toilet, bidet and washbasin.

Outside

With 104 acres of private estate, including riverside, hill,woodland and meadows there any many wonderful walks, vantage points and picnic spots to enjoy, However, to gain an insight into Carmarthenshire life we have listed a few of the local attractions that you may like to see. The nearby coastal areas of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire also make for a great day out.

Nearby Towns & Villages
Carmarthenshire’s small friendly towns and villages are welcoming and hospitable. Bwlch Tre Banau is within easy reach of the ancient Towns of Llandeilo, Llandovery and Lampeter.

Llandovery is a handsome small country and market town with Roman origins. Drive through medieval Stone Street to the historic town centre and park beside the romantic stone ruins of the 12th century castle. Stop off at one of our excellent restaurants, local bakeries or the great new coffee shop with newspapers, comfortable sofas and aromatic freshly ground coffees. Originally a Roman town, Llandovery still has a Farmers Market where the local farmers gather and an eclectic auction. Among the shops try the terrific local butcher, green grocer & delicatessen, bakery newsagent, the friendly Tourist Information office and the local library.

Llandeilo is a small thriving town perched proudly on the hillside just above the magnificent stone bridge that crosses the RiverTowy. Llandeilo's bridge is the finest example of a single-arch stone bridge in the whole of Wales. This historic small mediaeval town is one of the prettiest in Wales. It has a rich history. Initially a Roman settlement, for a while the town was a Royal capital, with its castle at Dinefwr being the administrative and military centre of this once powerful kingdom. These days visitors love to stroll around a myriad of small individual shops, galleries and boutiques or take a welcome break at one of the excellent coffee shops, tea rooms or restaurants.

Aberglasney Gardens At the heart of Aberglasney is an Elizabethan/Jacobean cloister and parapet walk, now fully restored - a world class and world-renowned garden set within the broader landscape of the beautiful Vale of Tywi. The gardens have a mysterious history that can be traced back over many centuries. It is a hauntingly beautiful 16th and 17th century garden designed to incorporate 6 different garden spaces in its 10 acres.

Dinefwr House, Country Park & Castle A remarkable property of exceptional significance for its archaeology, history, designed landscape, ecology, geology and buildings. Within the park are two Roman forts; a medieval castle linked to an illustrious phase of Welsh history; two medieval towns; the best example of ancient wood pasture in Wales; rare assemblages of lichens and insects; dead-wood fauna; ancient woodlands; a deer park; a designed landscape associated with ‘Capability'Brown; an 18th century farm complex; a church; a mansion and a herd of rare breed White Park Cattle

Dolacothi Gold Mine A unique Roman gold mine set amid wooded hillsides that has guided tours of the underground workings and an exhibition on gold. You can try your hand at panning for gold.


Golden Grove (Gelli Aur) 60 acres of wooded parkland surround this once magnificent mansion with commanding views across the Vale of Tywi. There is a 20-acre deer park, and nature trails to explore in woodland, parkland, ponds and meadow. The Arboretum, or tree collection is an impressive collection of mature trees and shrubs and in spring bluebells and wood sorrel carpet the woodland floor. It is a haven for birds and butterflies.

National Botanic Gardens of Wales Opened in 2000 by the Prince of Wales, the Sir Norman Foster designed Great Glasshouse is the largest single span glasshouse in the world. It is a delight for the senses as colour and scent abound. A double walled Garden has been rebuilt from the ruins of a centuries old garden from the Middleton Estate.

Other attractions abound including castles, spectacular waterfalls, the Llanybydder horse sales – a characterful glimpse into country life, salmon and sea-trout fishing on the rivers Teifi, Towy and Cothi, plus if you should hanker for a little city life we are only an hour and a half away from the delights of newly developed town center of Cardiff, one of the most up and coming cities in the UK with its concerts, sports events and amazingly endless shopping.
